7. Chinese Plane Spurs Interest in U.S. Fighter
Wall Street Journal.com, Jan. 18 - New evidence of China's military buildup has spurred interest in sales of the U.S.'s next-generation F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, U.S. defense and industry officials said. Beijing's growing military arsenal isn't a new development. But recently publicized images suggest China has made unexpected strides in developing the J-20, a "fifth-generation" aircraft that combines a stealthy, radar-eluding design with high-end fighter performance. Tom Burbage, general manager of the F-35 program for Lockheed Martin Corp., said Beijing's progress in developing the J-20 has created a "stronger sense of urgency" throughout the Asian-Pacific region about air-force modernization. He said Japan, South Korea and Singapore are now engaged in bilateral discussions with U.S. government officials over the F-35.
8. Enders Defends China in Renault Spy Case
Financial Times.com, Jan. 18 - China should not be singled out for attention in the Renault spy row and could be facing problems protecting its own industrial secrets, the head of Airbus said on Monday. Tom Enders, whose aviation group has an important assembly plant in Tianjin and regards China as a critical future market for its passenger jets, said espionage cases were “a fact of life” in industry and politics and “it’s not a problem with any particular country”.
9. Wisconsin Firm Learns Ups and Downs of Doing Business in China
Washington Post.com, Jan. 18 - As much as any U.S. firm, Manitowoc Co. has tied its fortunes to China's star, designing its corporate strategy around the promise of a booming billion-person market. But as President Obama and Chinese President Hu Jintao prepare to meet this week, Manitowoc's fitful performance illustrates the challenges of U.S. trade with China, even as it has become crucial for many companies, particularly in the decade since Beijing joined the World Trade Organization.
10. G.E. to Share Jet Technology With China in New Joint Venture
New York Times.com, Jan. 17 - As China strives for leadership in the world’s most advanced industries, it sees commercial jetliners — planes that may someday challenge the best from Boeing and Airbus — as a top prize. And no Western company has been more aggressive in helping China pursue that dream than one of the aviation industry’s biggest suppliers of jet engines and airplane technology, General Electric.
11. Special Report: Is a Solar Trade War about to Flare?
Reuters.com, Jan. 17 - Germany's fifth-biggest solar power park emerges as a smudge on the horizon long before you reach it on the outskirts of the small, sleepy village of Eberswalde, an hour's drive north of Berlin. "In the far distance, you can see it," Peter Kobbe says, pointing through heavy December snowfall as he steers his Citroen van along an icy road. . . . Germany has long been the global solar industry's engine. Europe's biggest economy consumed more than half the solar panels produced around the world in 2010. Solar accounts for just two percent of Germany's power production, but the country added a record 8,000 megawatts (MW) of solar modules last year -- equal to the capacity of eight nuclear reactors -- far outpacing Italy, Japan and the United States. So why are China's solar companies benefiting at the expense of renewable energy manufacturers in Europe and the United States?
12. New HASC Chairman Releases Oversight Plan

Howard P. "Buck" McKeon, R-Calif., also released a draft rules package, which contains a reorganization of the Armed Services subcommittee structure.
13. How We'll Fly in 2025 – NASA's Vision
NASA has begun testing revolutionary passenger aircraft set to take flight in 2025 that are faster and greener than existing models. In late 2010, NASA contracted three design teams from Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and The Boeing Company to work on the models for the rest of 2011. The three teams have already released artist conceptions of what the planes look like, including one by Boeing that’s a dead ringer for the stealth bomber, and another that has an engine perched at the back.
