3. White House: Export Reform Doesn’t Require Congress to Be Enacted

The Hill.com, July 25 - The Obama administration could enact nearly all of its proposed export-control changes without shepherding legislation through Congress, a White House official said Monday.  The administration has crafted a draft version of legislation that would implement some of its desired export reforms, according to Michael Froman, deputy national security adviser for international economic affairs.  But White House officials also have concluded that around 80 percent of their export-control proposals could be enacted via “executive authority,” Froman said.

4. Defense-Industry Career Track Looking Less Certain

Washington Post.com, July 25 - A job with a defense contractor was once a prized — and stable — position in the Washington region.  But top Pentagon officials have called on defense contractors to trim their costs and have made cuts to some large programs. The push for efficiency has rippled through the defense industry, prompting some firms to cut back their workforce and generating concerns that some of the industry’s most skilled employees and prospects will reconsider their career options.

5. Iran Redistributes Wealth in Bid to Fight Sanctions

Wall Street Journal.com, July 27 - Iran's Islamist government may be public enemy No. 1 at the White House. But in the halls of the International Monetary Fund a few blocks away, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is being hailed as an economic reformer.  In the face of mounting international sanctions, his government has embraced over the past seven months what the IMF calls one of the boldest economic makeovers ever attempted in the oil-rich Middle East.
