IBM Webinar: Integrating ITAR Controls into a Comprehensive Compliance Program

Completing the Puzzle - Integrating ITAR Controls into a Comprehensive Compliance Program

U.S. businesses must ensure ITAR compliance but must also address existing and emerging requirements for the security and privacy of “government information”. In most organizations responsibilities for export controls, information assurance, and data privacy are assigned to different offices. Controls and processes for compliance with different regulations are often inefficient, redundant, or inadequate to meet the demands of the controlling regime.

Mr. Heaney will present a methodology for the characterization of data and the identification of controls that “de-conflicts” multiple regimes and supports creation of a comprehensive compliance policy across all systems within the enterprise.

Featured Speaker: Michael Heaney, Export Regulation Executive, IBM Global Business Services / U.S. Public Sector

IBM Webinar: Approach and Framework to Protect Controlled Data

Control and Protection of Intellectual Property and Regulatory Restricted Information

Effective protection of particular classes of controlled information is a specific concern of companies depending on technical knowledge and proprietary processes to deliver leading-edge solutions to their clients..

Such information includes Intellectual Property (IP—the repository of a company’s competitive advantage) and any Regulatory Restricted Information (RRI, including, for example, controlled technical data)..

This session provides an overview of the concerns and describes a general data centric approach to management, control, and protection of controlled information. This IT approach and framework can be applied to address compliance with regulations requiring control of information, for example, the International Trafficking in Arms Regulations (ITAR).

Featured Speaker: Martin Allison, Associate Principal/Industrial Sector Lead, IBM Security and Privacy Practice

But export control compliance is not simply about avoiding fines. Properly approached and managed, export compliance can be a critical enabler to competitive advantage.

In this presentation targeted to companies that are subject to ITAR jurisdiction and controls, Gary Stanley will review his “commandments” that cover best practices and approaches to managing risks and improving ITAR compliance. The attendee will learn key issues that will allow his or her company to manage ITAR compliance more effectively, and moreover, turn compliance into a differentiator that can propel businesses into new heights of competitiveness. Achieving Data-Centric Security Using the XACML Policy Standard

Many companies today are striving to achieve Data-Centric Security, where security is focused on critical data assets. In response we have seen a number of new technologies emerge, such as data loss prevention (DLP) and Entitlement Management. This session examines the strategic role of the OASIS eXtensible Access Control Markup Language (XACML) standard in a holistic approach to data-centric security. Such an approach provides information risk management that bridges the gap between identity, applications and data and provides the policy management necessary to manage and tie the business security infrastructure together.

This session will use real customer use cases to examine the relevance of XACML to data-centric security initiatives and highlight the strategic importance of a policy standard across data security products such as data protection and enterprise entitlements management solutions. Since any data-centric security initiative strives to protect the data across applications and systems, shared policy, coordination, and interoperability are fundamental. These objectives become crucial when considering industry specific solutions in information compliance and protection, and we will illustrate how these technologies are applied to actual customer use cases such as data confidentiality, external collaboration, outsourcing, and remote and mobile workforces.

Intellectual Property Protection in "Highly Collaborative" Supply Chain Environments

The dynamic enterprise today, including industrial and high-tech manufacturers, pharmaceuticals, and other industries need to be able to collaborate safely and securely with numerous parties from supply chain partners, mobile employees, contractors, off-shore operations, joint venture partners, customers, and more in order to stay competitive. Maximizing the productivity of these various parties require the availability and accessibility of intellectual property and information that is often sensitive in nature. The loss or exposure of these digital assets may cause irreparable loss or harm upon one or more parties in collaboration.

However, there are significant challenges to enable smooth, frictionless collaboration while at the same time, ensuring that intellectual property remains safe and secure. This series looks at the challenges, common practices, and requirements for protecting intellectual property, prioritizes the severity of these issues, and explores best practices in achieving the objectives of safe and secure communications and collaboration with supply chain partners.

Part 1:  Where the Risks Are: Best Practices in Preventing Intellectual Property Theft and Exposure

Geared towards the line of business managers, this presentation will uncover common risks to a company's intellectual capital, especially when it comes to electronic information shared across the supply chain. Learn about common practices used by others in the industry in protecting intellectual property. Attendees will get an understanding of strategic and competitive issues, from the perspective of risk and benefits, in the protection of intellectual property. They will learn how to gauge the potential and severity of intellectual property loss in order to make decisions in how these issues should be handled. We will describe a framework for assessing risk exposure, and prioritize based on risk/reward.   We will answer critical questions including: (1) What are common practices - what are others in my industry doing? (2) What is the KPI matrix to measure and quantify risk/reward, (3) What is a good framework to assess exposure (risk, reward, opportunity, and threat) and (4) What is the implication if I don't take action.

Part 2: Prioritizing and Assessing Risks of Intellectual Property Loss in the Supply Chain

This webinar will address concerns and issues faced by legal, risk & compliance, and intellectual property practitioners. We will cover the most common challenges faced by companies with a global, distributed supply chains in different industries and examine how they can manage and handle sensitive digital assets when collaborating with supply chain partners.  Participants will learn how supply chain collaboration may affect how information is managed, accessed and shared within their organizations and recognize possible compliance risks. We will describe a model for managing compliance projects, by prioritizing based on risk.  Participants will learn the common steps for achieving control over intellectual property and be provided with a framework to determine the correct next steps. Key questions we address in this session: (1) What are the top 10 problems/challenges?  (2) What are the best practices? (3) How do I go about solving this problem?  (4) Which of my problems is most critical and how do I go about assessing risk?

Part 3: Addressing Intellectual Property Protection: Options and Solutions
